Interface Design

Medvis specializes in the development of intuitive user interfaces for a variety of medical devices. Our team has developed many software interfaces that communicate complex information to a variety of clinical professionals. These solution range from embedded device interfaces to sophisticated web-based, fully interactive information portals.

Poor interface design has been noted by many as a source of errors hospital wide. The FDA indicated, in a report on human factors and devices, that "poor user interface design greatly increases the likelihood of error in equipment operation".

We employ design principles that ensure that the end product is easy to use and satisfies the goal of information simplified. Our interfaces have been shown to have these benifits:

Medvis associates have over 8 patent applications and numerous commercial licenses for new visualization techniques and user interfaces. These have been applied in many fields including medicine, computer network defense, business intelligence, process control and resource management.

Usability Testing

Medvis offers a range of usability testing services specifically tailored to the needs of each project. Since the Spring of 2003, Medvis has provided usability testing of information presentation systems, data displays, and visual technologies in the medical and IT domains, as well as usability testing for developing novel applications and Web site usability. We have extensive expertise in analyzing the specific requirements of a design initiative and applying appropriate methodologies to effectively determine the optimal configuration that best supports the end user’s goals.

Our approach to usability places high value into integrating a multidisciplinary approach to iterative, user oriented design. Central to each stage of the product development cycle, a device, application or website should be usability tested to objectively determine the impact on task performance, user satisfaction and appeal, as well as strengths and weaknesses of the product’s design. Simply put, design efficiency is maximized through usability testing. Benefits from incorporating usability testing in the product design process have been shown to:

Patient Simulator Consulting

Medvis provides consulting services for patient simulation. Medvis associates have 8 years of experience working with patient simulators, including set-up, maintenance, and scripting/programming. A realistic clinical environment combined with a high fidelity patient simulator, such as the METI HPS who have over 200 installations nationwide, provide an immersive clinical experience for educational or evaluation purposes. Patient simulators are used predominently in educating clinicians and students in appropriate methods in caring for patients.

Our services include:

  • custom scripting/programming of a simulation's behavior intended for doctors, nurses, residents and medical students in anesthesiology, intensive care, emergency care, administration of moderate sedation during same-day surgeries, etc.
  • generation of materials and props for a simulation
  • on-site evaluation of existing simulation setup and program
