Core medvis team
Jim Agutter, Owner
Jim designs innovative technology in medicine. He has held positions at the University of Utah as the Director of the Design Program, Director of the Spark Design Initiative, Assistant Research Professor, Assistant Director of the Center for the Representation of Multi-Dimensional Information, and Associate Research Scientist in the Center for High Performance Computing. He has published numerous articles on visualization applications across a broad range of applications and won the 2004 - 2005 Creative Acheivement Award from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. In his free time, you can find Jim mountain biking on the local single track, road biking the California coastline, playing softball, snowboarding at Utah's resorts, and enjoying time with his active family.
Noah Syroid, Owner
Noah fosters the process of bringing new medical technology into a valuable product that fits users' needs. He has a M.S. in Bioengineering and a B.S. in Computer Engineering, with 15+ years experience in patient monitoring, pharmacologic modeling, bioinstrumentation, scientific/information visualization, human factors usability evaluation, and software engineering management. Noah's positions as a research computer scientist, biomedical engineer, and Technical Director for the University of Utah Center for Patient Simulation have served as the foundation for his deep understanding of medical technology development and evaluation. In his free time, you can find Noah trying to convince his family and friends to travel, ski, mountain bike, hike, camp, backpack, climb peaks, tenkara fly fish, appreciate good food, and grow vegetables.
Talmage Egan M.D., Owner
Dr. Egan completed his undergraduate studies at Brigham Young University, graduating Magna Cum Laude in the humanities. He attended medical school at the University of Utah School of Medicine where he was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Egan completed training in surgery and anesthesiology at the University of Utah and Stanford University, followed by a fellowship in clinical pharmacology at Stanford. Dr. Egan is currently professor and chair at the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Utah School of Medicine, where he has served as President of the Medical Staff and Chair of the Medical Board. His clinical practice focuses on neuroanesthesia, having served as Chief of Neuroanesthesia for over a decade. Dr. Egan’s research interests include the clinical pharmacology of sedatives and analgesics, the development of novel intravenous anesthetics and alternative propofol formulations, and the development of optimal drug administration regimens based on pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic concepts. He is internationally regarded as a pioneer in the development of total intravenous anesthesia techniques, particularly the clinical application of the short acting opioid remifentanil, and the characterization of the interaction between propofol and opioids. Dr. Egan served for many years as an officer and president of the International Society for Anaesthetic Pharmacology. Currently an Associate Editor for the British Journal of Anaesthesia, he has also served as Associate Editor for Anesthesiology. He has published a popular anesthesia pharmacology and physiology textbook with Elsevier as co-editor. Dr. Egan was the inaugural recipient of the International Anesthesia Research Society’s Teaching Recognition Award. He is holder of the K.C. Wong Presidential Endowed Chair in Anesthesiology at the University of Utah. In 2016, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for Anaesthetic Pharmacology.
Dwayne Westenskow, Owner
Dwayne retired from directing the Anesthesiology Bioengineering Laboratory at the University of Utah for over 37 years. His laboratory has conducted research in the areas of patient simulation research, modeling and visualization, gas delivery and sensing, and peri-operative data mining. Dwayne's directorship and mentoring resulted in the ME, MS, or PhD of over 95 graduate students in the fields of biomedical engineering and medical informatics at the University of Utah. To our good fortune, we have Dwayne to lend his extensive expertise in guiding the direction of our projects.
Diane Tyler, Clinical Study Expert
Diane has been in medical-surgical nursing with over 20 years’ experience in pre-operative, post-anesthesia and post-operative care. She is an RN and has a Masters of Nursing Administration degree. Diane knows clinical study coordination from top to bottom and has been involved in evaluating medical devices in patient simulators, simulation education and sedation training since 2001. She serves as our clinical study expert and will ensure that the evaluation process for your medical technology is flawless. In her free time, Diane travels the world with her husband and visits the best natural places that Utah has to offer (and there are a lot of places to visit).
Soeren Hoehne, Biomedical Engineer
Soeren is a bioengineer with a knack for building prototypes. Soeren knows 3-D design, 3-D printing, and electronic circuit design. He is also a high fidelity patient simulator expert and knows how to evaluate a device. Bring an idea to Soeren and he will create it. He enjoys traveling the world and discovering new things to do in urban Salt Lake City.
